Located above Makiki Heights, Tantalus is a neighborhood accessed by a looping road known as Roundtop Drive. The transition from downtown Honolulu to a quiet rainforest with beautiful singing birds, guava trees and views of Diamond Head is breathtaking and sudden.
This is a favorite area for people who enjoy views of the city lights and quiet evenings at home. Not far from the lookout area is Pu'u Ualaka'a Park. One can see for miles from east to west at this location. Tantalus also has some great trails for walking and running.
Tantalus is a small neighborhood whose population is less than 1,000 people. The area was originally established by wealthy Honoluluans wanting homes on the cool hillsides.
From Wilder Avenue in Makiki, when you reach Makiki Street turn towards the mountain. Continue past Nehoa Street and reach a fork in the road. Turn left and proceed up Makiki Heights Drive or go straight to Round Top Drive. Both paths lead to Tantalus Drive.
