Hawaii Kai Listings by Neighborhoods:
Koko Head Terrace
Some other neighborhoods are Mariners Ridge, Queens Gate, Hahaione and Kalama Valley. There are many homes on the marina, with easy access to the water and some even have moorings suitable for parking your boat. From your home to the ocean is just a short ride away.
From Honolulu, take the H-1 freeway eastbound and continue as it merges onto Kalanianaole Highway (72). Turn left at Hawaii Kai Drive, Keahole Street or Lunalilo Home Road and explore Hawaii Kai.
From Kailua and Waimanalo, drive east on Kalanianaole Highway. The road will curve around the east side of Oahu and turn to the south and then west. Continue driving past Hanauma Bay. Reach the intersection of Kalanianaole Highway and Lunalilo Home Road and you're in Hawaii Kai (see Koko Marina Shopping Center on the map below).
Hawaii Kai was initially developed by Henry J. Kaiser in the 1950's. The area was wetlands called Kuapa Pond. The pond was dredged to make its channels deeper and the land drier and more suitable for residential development. Hawaii Kai was originally Bishop Estate land and it was leased to Henry Kaiser's companies, which built homes and sold them in leasehold to individual buyers. Most of the properties have been converted to fee simple.
Lunalilo Home Road is one of Hawaii Kai's main routes. Lunalilo Home Road is named after Lunalilo Home. The home is named after King Lunalilo, whose will established the home in the 1880's to care for elderly Hawaiians. Originally located at the site of Roosevelt High School, Lunalilo Home moved to 501 Kekauluohi Street (a side street off of Lunalilo Home Road) in 1927.
