This is a mature neighborhood right in the heart of Kailua. Existing Coconut Grove homes were built as early as the 1940's. The median age of homes here is approximately 50 years. Although many of Coconut Grove's homes are older, they are nicely taken care of, for the most part.
Coconut Grove is a desirable neighborhood because it is more affordable than most of Kailua's other neighborhoods. It's also close to the beach and Kailua District Park. A wide variety of restaurants and shopping centers are in nearby Kailua town. If an affordable beach lifestyle is what you're looking for, Coconut Grove maybe the right place.
From Honolulu, take the Pali Highway (61) to Kailua. Continue into Kailua town. Just past the intersection with a small bridge, you can turn left onto Kainehe Street or go straight and turn left onto Oneawa Street. The Coconut Grove neighborhood area includes Kihapai Street, Oneawa, Maluniu and Kawainui to Kalama Streets.
Much of Kailua was agricultural land 100+ years ago. Coconuts were a popular crop and Coconut Grove was filled with coconut trees back then. As development spread through Kailua in the 1940's, most of the trees were cut down to make room for homes.
