Tucked between Wailupe Valley and Niu Valley is Aina Haina. East and West Hind Drive are the main access roads into Aina Haina Valley. Aina Haina Shopping Center is located along Kalanianole Highway, providing area residents with a local spot to buy groceries, have dinner at a restaurant and fill up the gas tank.
From Honolulu, drive eastbound on the H-1 freeway. The H-1 transitions to Kalanianaole Highway (72) in Kahala, continue eastbound. After passing Wailupe Beach Park, prepare to make a left turn either on West Hind Drive or East Hind Drive.
From Hawaii Kai, look for East Hind Drive and make a right turn. If you miss the turn, continue to West Hind Drive and turn right.
Some Aina Haina history
This neighborhood was named after Robert Hind, who operated a dairy in the 1930's and 40's. At that point in time, the entire Aina Haina valley was a dairy farm. Eventually the dairy shut down and Mr. Hind's son began residential development in the 1950's.
Aina Haina translates to "Land of the Hinds" in Hawaiian.
