Hawaii Kai history

  • Hawaii Kai was initially developed by Henry J. Kaiser in the 1950's.  The area was wetlands called Kuapa Pond.  The pond was dredged to make its channels deeper and the land drier and more suitable for residential development.  Hawaii Kai was originally Bishop Estate land and it was leased to Henry Kaiser's companies, which built homes and sold them in leasehold to individual buyers.  Most of the properties have been converted to fee simple.
  • Lunalilo Home Road is one of Hawaii Kai's main routes.  Lunalilo Home Road is named after Lunalilo Home.  The home is named after King Lunalilo, whose will established the home in the 1880's to care for elderly Hawaiians.  Originally located at the site of Roosevelt High School, Lunalilo Home moved to 501 Kekauluohi Street (a side street off of Lunalilo Home Road) in 1927.
